In a few days ma parents r gonna get me an ma sis a Venus fly trap. So wat r some things I should know. I live in south eastern Iowa and I'll be in a attic. I know u don't feed it hamburger meat, but wat about like steak? Or is it no to all meats? I know they go dorment and it looks like they r dying but they r still alive. For water it's distiled or reverse osmosis or rain. Wat about sunlight. I know it needs alot of sun light but I don't wanna "cook" it as iv read can happen. I know it needs alot of water or humidity. Since I'm at skewl for about seven hours if I water it befor skewl will it b fine for the rest of the day till I get home? Also it makes seeds or flowers. Iv herd u should clip them off, should I? Iv also read it will naturaly like split or make another root system or something like that. Is that true? Can they eat wasps? I get a few in ma room in the summer and I don't like killing them cuz they r hard to kill an I don't wanna get stung. Also it says 2-3 bugs a month I'm guessing that's per plant but just o be sure that's not for each mouth pod thing right? What is the temperature rang for growing season? Dorment? O and Im gonna be growin these inside. About how long do they take to grow to have the pod things? And untill then how should I keep them alive? Any other tips u hav on growin would be appreciated. Or any links u have to good sites. Or on getting more from one plant cuz I'd like to get more. I know it's alot of questions but I want to grow these right. Thanx in advance.

feed insects ONLY... never meat of any kind.... they cannot digest it....too much fat!!...this FIRST site is a good one...http://www.google.com/search?q=flytrap+care&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1you've been reading already, and that's GREAT!!.. that first link, tho, is a friend who comes HERE on Yahoo often.... and that is a good place to learn to care for your new plant.... the other thing I've learned from the site is that you should not expect the traps to 'perform' for you and your friends... once they have closed a number of times, they won't do it anymore...

You should never feed a Venus fly trap anything other than insects. That means no meat, no doritos, no avocados, etc., only things that they would catch on their own in nature. If you pot your plant in a proper pot and don't keep it in a terrarium, the chance of it cooking in direct sunlight is almost none. Just try to give it as much sunlight as you can. For that reason, I'd recommend that you grow it outside.Since you are new to growing Venus fly traps, here are the basic things Venus Fly Traps require to stay healthy:1. Sunlight - at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day2. Water - rain, distilled or reverse osmosis water only3. Soil - Nutrient poor soil such as peat moss4. Dormancy - Venus Fly Traps require a 3-4 month dormancy periodVenus fly traps like lots of light. Try to give it at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. The more you can give it the better. It is best to grow your fly trap outside where it can get plenty of sun and catch its own food. You don't actually have to feed a Venus Fly Trap anything other than sunlight and water. If you do choose to feed it, it only needs a few bugs a month and don't feed it anything other than insects.Venus fly traps need clean water. Usually tap water will not do. It is best to use distilled water, rain water, or reverse osmosis water. Venus fly traps need water with a TDS (total dissolved solids) measurement of 50 ppm (parts per million) or less. In order to get this, you probably need to buy distilled water or reverse osmosis water or collect rain water. Their soil should be kept moist at all times except during the winter when it should be just barely damp. Be careful not to over water the plant. The best way to water it is using the tray method. Allow the tray to dry out for a day or two before refilling it with an inch or so of water (assuming you're using a fairly deep pot), and you should let the tray dry out longer (6 to 8 days or until the soil is barely damp) when the plant is dormant. For soil you can use a combination of peat moss and/or perlite and/or silica sand. Most growers use a 50:50 mix of peat moss and perlite. Venus Fly Traps aren't picky, but be sure to use some form of peat moss or sphagnum peat moss with perlite or silica sand to ensure that the media is nutrient poor. I typically use 5 parts peat, 3 parts silica sand and 2 parts perlite. This provides good aeration to the soil so that they can grow a healthy root system and get very large. Also, deep pots with good insulation help the plant grow larger and stronger by giving them more room and protection for their roots. Finally, without a dormancy period, your plant's health will start to decline and it will eventually die. Your plant should be dormant right now.
