Bake any flavor cake mix in 2 layer pans, 8 or 9 x 1 1/2", as directed on package. Melt 1 pkg (6oz) semisweet chocolate pieces and 1 tbsp. shortening over hot water.
Cover baking sheet with waxed paper. Spread chocolate mixture 1/8" thick on baking sheet. Chill until firm. Prepare fluffy white frosting mix as directed on package. If desired, tint with food color. Frost cake.
With bear cookie cutter or paper pattern, cut out figures from chocolate mixture. Make figures the width of a wedge of cake so each slice will have a complete figure. Remove figures carefully from waxed paper; place at regular intervals on side of cake. Press birthday candles into gumdrops and place on top of cake.
