1/2 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup sugar
4 tablespoons sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg, beaten
8 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, cut in thick slices
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons slivered almonds
Servings: 6
1. Preheat oven to 350F.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the butter, 1/2 cup sugar, flour, baking powder, vanilla extract and egg. Pour half the batter into a greased 8" square baking pan and spread to cover bottom.

3. In another large bowl, toss the apple slices with the remaining 4 tbs. sugar and cinnamon, then place on top of the batter in the baking pan. Spread the remaining batter over the apple mixture.

4. Bake for 20 minutes; then sprinkle with almonds and bake for 30 minutes more.
