Lemon coconut bars

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup icing sugar
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 pkg. jello lemon pie filling
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 cup chopped dates
1 1/3 cups coconut
icing sugar
1 to 1 1/2 dozen bars
Thoroughly cream butter and icing sugar.
Add flour and mix well.
Press evenly into bottom of 8" square pan.
Bake at 350F for 20 to 25 minutes, until lightly browned.
Meanwhile, beat eggs until thick and light in color.
Gradually beat in granulated sugar.
Blend in pie filling mix and baking powder.
Fold in dates and coconut.
Spread over hot baked crust.
Return to oven and bake 30 to 35 minutes longer, until golden brown.
Cool.
Sprinkle with icing sugar if desired.
Cut into bars.
Store in tightly covered container.
