The top of the stove is black. I also have little scratches I'd like to remove, the stove is only 1 year old. The grates look terrible. I can't get the stuff off. I clean it after each use but I can't get it really clean.

I used to take the grates off once a year, spray them down with oven cleaner, and let them set for a day somewhere safe. Just be careful not to get the oven cleaner anywhere that will cause a problem. The grates would come out of it nicely. I hated the chore, you have my sympathies. I have a nice electric one now, with the glass top which is sooooo nice to clean.

If the grates can be removed try soaking them in washing detergent for a few hours or overnight. The burnt on stuff should then be easy to remove with a bit of elbow grease. This works for the wire trays inside your oven too.I found this tip on a web site and said to place in the bath but I found it better to get a large rubbish sack and put that in the bath and fill with racks and washing solution. That way you won't mark or scratch the bath. Of course if you have a large enough kitchen sink you can do it in there.I find spraying my over top with 50/50 vinegar and water works well on the grease and I put aluminium foil on the top of my stove to stop it getting too marked. My stove top is white and before I started doing this I had black scratches on the surface which would not budge no matter what I tried.. These disappeared maybe something to do with the foil, I really don't know.Perhaps it would work in reverse on yours?Good luck

For the grates, use Easy -Off Oven Cleaner. I would suggest the one in the blue can because it is odorless and it wont burn your skin if you happen to get it on it. Spray them really good, and leave it over night. Then use very hot water to spray it off next day. I usually let them soak in the sink full of hot water and a little 409 next day. For the top of your stove, sorry to say without having it re-glazed, the scratches are there for good. But you can make them allot less noticeable with the use of Lemon Oil. My stove is fifty years old,is black, and has grates that are hard to clean also, but I use the lemon oil after I wash it with a soft cloth and it just gleams like it was spanking new!
