bought new home ripped up carpet & found pet stain on boards any cleaning tips w/o ruining wood?

also need advice on eliminating odors as well as stains. the boards under the carpet are just like plain ply wood or something. plan to put hardwood floor over but we do not want to weaken the "under" wood. not sure how deep the stains are through the wood but would it maybe help to sand the stains out and would that help get rid of odor as well?

My father in law had the same problem. No matter what he did he couldn't get rid of the odor. He eventually had to buy a sealer to paint the wood with before he laid more carpet. Talk to a flooring expert. They'll be able to help you.

sanding would help the stains if they aren't to deep, but will do nothing for the smell. Try painting it with an oil based primer or paint. That will get rid of the smell and cover the stain. Good Luck!

We had the same problem in our house. The beautiful "brand new" carpet in the master bedroom had to get torn up to find the horrible odor. We found that the carpet padding and the hardwood floors underneath were completely rotted. We had to replace each individual floorboard that was affected and completely replace the carpet. If your flooring is not ruined but simply stained and stinky you can try covering with a sealing paint. Try a oil based enamel. This shouldn't hurt anything if you are planning to install wood flooring over it. But make sure the floor board is not ruined first.

There is a special paint that you can buy at the hardware store for that. Do not sand on it it has soaked to deep into the wood.

Your best bet is to pull up the damaged area and replace it with new sub flooring(plywood). The urine has already weakened the glue bond in the plywood. There are chemicals that will eliminate the odor, but by the time you spend the money on them, it would be more cost effective to just replace the damaged wood. Sanding is a better alternative on a hardwood(oak) floor, but the softwood(pine) that plywood is made from will absorb it throughout. You do not want to paint over it either. The acids in the urine will cause the adhesion of the paint to break down resulting in the paint cracking, releasing that wonderfully, hideous smell.

As a rule when there are pet stains on the plywood, your best bet is to replace it as it is almost impossible to get the odor out of boards. However, i do know of a very good cleaner for pet stain and odor on your carpet or fabrics, you could spray this on and see how deep it is. Usually though everytime a dog smells this odor spot, he or other dogs are sure to find it, so think twice about covering it up, sometimes a little extra expense is worth alot of headache latter down the road if the odor comes back. The cleaner is: CAPTURE pet stain and odor neutralizer. This can be found at Lowe's.

The only way to cover up the odor is to paint a sealer primer on the stain. You can use a product called Kilz, it's a primer sealer, make sure you get the oil based sealer. What the sealer will do it will seal the odor in where you wont smell the odor, The sealer forms a hard shell and it won,t hurt the wood. You can also cover water stains on your ceilings with this product. Good luck

open the windows and spray the floor with Clorox bleach in a pump up sprayer. the bleach will react with the ammonia in the floor and give off some noxious odors. When the floor has dried scrape up all the old padding that you can get up and paint the floor with killz oil based primer. Ive fixed up enough skanky rent houses to know.
