Beer Can Chicken Probably The Best Ever Chicken Recipe
Beer can chicken is one of my most favorite barbecue foods. It's the perfect BBQ bird, bronzed and crispy on the outside, moist and succulent on the inside, and bursting with flavor.

Also known as chicken on the throne, drunken chicken, dancing chicken, beer butt chicken, beer in the butt chicken, and some other less polite names, this is now a classic barbeque dish.
Although it has beer in the name, you can also make it with soft drinks, fruit juices, tea, etc.
So, How Do You Cook Beer Can Chicken? The Basic process is to take a part empty can of beer and 'sit' a whole chicken on top of it while it cooks
The chicken is usually cooked in a bbq smoker or in a hooded grill using the indirect cooking method. It can be made indoors in an oven although you won't get the smoky flavor.
Prior to cooking the chicken can be seasoned with herbs and spices such as cayenne, onions, cumin, garlic and oregano.
Beer can chicken can also be marinated and brined first. It's up to your imagination.

A Unique Technique.
Grilling the bird standing up allows the fat to drip away off the skin, allowing the skin to crisp evenly all around.
Simultaneously the beer vapors impregnate the chicken from inside, effectively steaming it and keeping it juicy and tender.
Then there's the wonderful smokiness imparted by the wood smoke.
Finally there is the wow factor when you present the finished chicken standing upright and proud and ready for carving.

Do You Need Special equipment?

If you have a barbecue smoker, or a barbecue grill with a hood that's large enough to place a chicken standing upright in it then you don't need any special equipment. There are recipes for both smoked and grilled beer can chicken.
Balancing the chicken can be a bit tricky in that you use the legs of the chicken and the beer can itself to act as a sort of tripod. Sometimes the chicken can tip over. For that reason I would recommend that you use a beer can chicken roaster.
The only other equipment that you need is a drip pan under the chicken.
