Cold Water Cake

2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cloves
2 tablespoons shortening
1 pound muscat raisins
2 cups cold water
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon salt
Servings: 12
Put first 7 ingredients in saucepan, stir and boil 5 minutes. Let cool. Add the vanilla then the flour, soda and salt which have been sifted together. Add cherries and nuts.
