Can the amount of radiation be adjusted or changed to a higher or lower amount by dentists?

Most dental x-ray machines in the US are set to the lowest possible settings in order to get the x-ray taken. They is also very extensive filtration and collimation to narrow the beam coming from the machine. Also lead aprons are used. as a result, you will receive more radiation from a day outdoors than you would from a set of cavity detecting x-rays at the dental office.
