What are some tips on cleaning out a messy closet easily?

My daughter has a project in Home-Ec. to clean out her room completley. This is a large task for her, as a teenager, because she has no organizational system whatsoever.I would really prefer not to but an organizational system for her closet, but tips would be appreciated.Thanks!

Take everything out and only put back in what she uses/needs. Then give everything else to a charity.

one thing that helps is not to have any junk on the floors of your closet, pull-out drawers for other misc items are quite helpful as well, throw out any clothing item not used in the last 6 months or year, and throw out any junk or things not used

use a large shovel.

Get a little hand held Label machine to help her out. If she has shelves, good or get Sterlite tubs or Rubbermaid to hold specific things. Good for winter clothes.She can empty the closet, label the shelves and tubs and sort. Target, Lowe's and Home Depot have the shoe cubbies to store shoes in. They are really worth the money.You can get the over the door shoe bags to hold bottles of things, it is very helpful. Sets of baskets are good for holding things. A bulleting board for jewelry is good. Big push pins and little plastic zip lock bags for earrings. Pin them on the board.You can go to thrift stores and get very inexpensive baskets, spray paint them to match the room.I will tell you my favorite phrase "HOW DO YOU EAT AN ELEPHANT, ONE BITE AT A TIME". So encourage her to do one part at a time. Dresser, Night stands, Bed, Closet, chest. Good Luck.Mom it is your Job to guide her. You are her role model.You are her example. As a teenager, she's getting to the age that she needs organization in her life. I think this project is a great start; as her mom, it's good that you're encouraging her.First, take everything out of the closet. Separate into piles: keep, donate, and throw away. Then go through and sort out all the stuff. You can help her by buying shoe racks, plastic bins, etc. Some people use the 6 month or 1 year rule - if you haven't worn an article of clothing in that amount of time, get rid of it. I kind of do that - but make a few exceptions here and there. Have fun cleaning!

I always clean a closet when I'm angry. I do a better job by being ruthless.
