A little patience brings great reward -- a mildly spiced, orange-flavored liqueur. Straining mixture through cheesecloth will result in a bright, clear appearance.
3 cups vodka
1/2 cup grated orange zest
1 piece of peeled gingerroot (3"), sliced
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup water
Serves 30
Combine vodka, orange zest and ginger in sterile jar with tight fitting lid.
Let stand for 1 week at room temperature.
Strain through sieve into 4 cup liquid measure.
Discard solids.
Return liquid to same jar.
Combine sugar and water in small saucepan.
Bring to a boil on medium.
Heat and stir until sugar is dissolved.
Remove from heat.
Cool.
Add to vodka mixture in jar.
Makes about 3 1/2 cups.
Let stand for 1 week at room temperature.
Strain through cheesecloth into 4 cup liquid measure.
Discard solids.
Transfer to storage jar or fancy bottle with tight fitting lid.
Store for up to 1 month at room temperature or in refrigerator.
Serving Suggestion:
Equally good served at room temperature or over ice.
Use as substitute for orange-flavored liqueurs in mixed drinks.
