Mulled Wine

Rich, red wine color and flavor with citrus and spice tones. Use a full-bodied red wine for best results.

2 cups water
1/2 cup granulated sugar
8 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick (4")
3 cups dry red (or alcohol-free) wine
1 medium orange, sliced thinly
Serves 6
Measure first 4 ingredients into large saucepan.
Bring to a boil on medium.
Reduce heat to medium-low.
Simmer, uncovered, for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved and mixture is fragrant.
Remove and discard cloves and cinnamon stick.
Add wine and orange slices.
Heat and stir until just hot.
Do not boil.
Makes about 6 cups.
Pour into 6 small mugs.
Place 1 orange slice in each.
