Are you painting over paint or painting over stain? That's kinda important. If painting over paint, I recommend latex enamel. If painting over stain, for best results, you'll need to lightly sand, then use a base coat primer, then latex enamel. Finer bristle brushes will give you a smoother surface, but I actually prefer a small roller, with sponge "brushes" for edging and cutting in. ALWAYS remove all hardware rather than trying to tape, or paint around it! You'll be so much happier with the results if you take the time to remove the hinges and handles!
