Questions about painting kitchen cabinets?

has anyone ever painted there kitchen cabinets before? if so, do you have any tips when doing this... what type of primer, paint, brushes, etc.thanks in advance!im painting old cabinets.they are wooden.

<<< CarpenterFirst off if your cabinets are plastic laminate then you wont be able to paint them.,,If the are just plain wood cabinets then your in luck.first lightly sand all surfaces to be painted. this will will allow the primer to bond. then paint. if your in a house with a lot of women who hale long nails then you might think about adding a clear coat to protect the paint from scratches.

i havent painted cabinets before but heres some tipspaint use a white primer go to a home depot and they will explain it alluse a greeny type homey color i would use a brush depending on your cabinets type. if flat use a brush that is flat and has a green flat rectangle brush this is my best and open windows to get all the fumes out and try a backsplash that machtes your color!

always clean with soap and water then use a latex primer called Kilz (i think) firstthen go to sherwin williams, don't mess with home depot or Lowe's, sherwin williams has the best paint . probably latex paint don't use flat, you'll need to wipe the cabinets flat is no good for this. Ask the people at sherwin williamsoops, use small brush in crevices try to roll everything else 3/8" or less nap. Spraying is the best but need to rent equipment and is technique dependent, stick to brush and roller.

Are you painting over paint or painting over stain? That's kinda important. If painting over paint, I recommend latex enamel. If painting over stain, for best results, you'll need to lightly sand, then use a base coat primer, then latex enamel. Finer bristle brushes will give you a smoother surface, but I actually prefer a small roller, with sponge "brushes" for edging and cutting in. ALWAYS remove all hardware rather than trying to tape, or paint around it! You'll be so much happier with the results if you take the time to remove the hinges and handles!

I painted my wooden kitchen cabinets in my other house. I removed the doors and hardware..washed all with TSP and rinsed well....lightly sanded everything... applied a coat of kilz primer...let dry...then painted with a semi gloss kitchen paint. They turned out great...inside and out. I added new hardware and it looked like a new kitchen. It was still going strong a few years later when I sold the house.

If they are wood Take all of the panels off the hinges and sand them with an electric sander. Use a stain to stain them. or Prime them with Kills. Then paint the the color of your choice. It's a really big job and some are unsuccessful at it. It may be more cost effective and time effective to just by new cabinet fronts and handles and paint the base of the cabinets.
