Whether shaken or stirred, the proportions in these recipes can be varied to suit your personal taste: the less vermouth, the drier the drink. Crisp, cold, dry -- the ultimate martini. Simple to prepare, elegant to serve.

3 tbsp. gin (1 1/2oz)
1 1/2 tbsp. dry vermouth (3/4oz)
2-4 ice cubes
2 pimiento-stuffed olives
Serves 1
Stirred Method:
Measure gin and dry vermouth into 1 cup liquid measure.
Add ice cubes.
Stir until cold.
Strain through sieve into martini glass. Makes about 1/3 cup.
Thread olives onto cocktail pick.
Place in glass.

Shaken Method:
Measure gin and dry vermouth into cocktail shaker.
Add ice cubes.
Replace lid.
Hold firmly and shake vigorously until cold.
Strain through sieve into martini glass.
Makes about 1/3 cup.
Thread olives into cocktail pick.
Place in glass.

Vodka Martini:
Omit gin.
Use same amount of vodka.

Dry Martini:
Measure 1/4 cup gin and 1/2 tbsp. dry vermouth into liquid measure or cocktail shaker.
Add ice cubes.
Stir or shake until cold.
Strain through sieve into martini glass.
Garnish with olives.

Serving suggestion:
Lemon twists are an attractive alternative to the traditional olive-embellished martini.
Choose a pickled onion instead and you've just made a "Gibson!"
