Syrup:
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
6 to 10 drops red food coloring
3 tbsp. butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Cake:
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup milk
2 tsp. baking powder
2/3 cups shortening

6 medium apples, pared and cored (your choice) quartered or sliced

Syrup:
Bring to a boil all ingredients except butter.
Remove from heat; add butter.

Cake:
Sift dry ingredients, cut in shortening (to coarse crumbs).
Add milk and stir until flour is moistened.
On lightly floured surface, roll out to 1/8" to 1/4" thick, into an 18x12" rectangle.
Cut into 6" squares.
Place apples onto each square.
Sprinkle generously with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Dot with butter.
Moisten edges of squares, fold corners to center and pinch edges together.
Place in ungreased pan, pour syrup over dumplings and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake at 375F for 35 minutes or until apples are done.
Serve warm with cream or ice cream.
