1 pkg. (8oz) pitted dates, cut up
2 tbsp. sugar
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 pkg. Betty Crocker devils food cake mix
1 pkg. Betty Crocker fluffy white frosting mix
Cook dates, sugar and water over low heat, stirring constantly, until thick, about 7 minutes. Stir in nuts. Cool.
Heat oven to 350F. Grease and flour jelly roll pan, 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1". Cut butter into cake mix (dry) until crumbly; reserve 1/3 cup mixture. Pat remaining mixture in pan. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until light brown.
Prepare frosting mix as directed on package. Spread date mixture on baked layer; cover with frosting. Top with reserved cake mixture. Bake 25 minutes or until topping is golden brown. Cool. Cut into 1 1/2" squares.
