My 14 month old daughter has a really bad diaper rash. I don't know if she is having an allergic reaction to some new foods we've given her or if it's from her teething. But now she has developed open sores on her butt and cries every time we change her diaper. We have tried Desitin but that's not helping. We don't even have to try to let her run around naked cause once she pees, she takes her diaper off and runs around naked on her own. How do I know if it's a normal but obviously bad dipaer rash or a rash because of a food allergy or I've heard it could be yeast infection? How do I know what it is? And if there is anything else I can do for her until I can get her to her doctor. Please help!!Well she just got this diaper rash yesterday and my husband noticed the little open sores. She's gotten a rash like this before but we were able to get it gone within that same day. I'm at work right now so I can't take her to be seen for another hour or so and my husband is at home with her and has called and left a message for the on call doctor. Thanks for your advice so far! It will all be helpful for the future.

IF SHE HAS OPEN SORES, THEN YOU HAVE HAD MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME TO GET HER TO A DOCTOR. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD ONE, THEN TAKE HER TO THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT IN YOUR CITY, IT IS FREE. IF IT IS AS BAD AS YOU SAY, THEN I WOULD TAKE HER TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM, THEY NEVER WILL TURN DOWN ANYONE FOR TREATMENT WHETHER THEY CAN PAY OR NOT. JUST DO SOMETHING NOW. THIS CHILD IS SO YOUNG. JUST IMAGINE AT YOUR AGE HOW IT WOULD FEEL IF YOU HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM. DO IT NOW, GET OFF THIS WEB SITE. LET IT GO TOO LONG AND YOU'LL END UP GETTING TURNED OVER TO CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES FOR CHILD NEGLICT.

She can have an allergic reactin from food. But until you can get to a doctor let her run ariund the house naked either with corn starch on her rash, or put your spit on her, I know that sounds gross and weird but my daughter had a very bad on do to a kidney infection and medication would not work. The Dr. told me to do that and in 2 days it was gone. good luck! cause she is in pain probably

My daughter has had problems with all diaper rash treatments. The best thing I have found to stop rashes is corn starch or using a bit of vasiline

First, you REALLY need to take her in to see the doctor, so that he can tell you what it is. Until then, since the sores are open, you can use a neosporin ointment with pain reliever built in. Every time she pees, clean her up like you normally would, and use a hair dryer set on cool to help make sure that she's completely dry. Letting her run around naked is actually a good idea, since that limits the amount of contact she'll have with the bacteria and moisture in her diaper, reducing her chances of an infection. Hope this helps, but please get her in to see a doctor ASAP.

You said she has developed open sores. That is dangerous and you should take her to the doctor immediately. A fungal infection can set in with open sores and that is way beyond a diaper rash. Stop using the desitin and any creams until she gets seen by a pediatrician.

Are you using CLOTH diapers? Our girl was allergic to the SOAP used to clean them. It's probably dermatitis either from urine or soap. You need to get to to the Dr. before an infection.

In addition to the Desitin, try a little bit of jock itch cream on her butt. The combination is really helping my nephew's rash, and he's just a little older than your daughter.

Take a 1/2 cup of flour and brown it in a fry pan. Once browned cool it off totally. If you have a shaker (that you would use in the kitchen for powder sugar or cinnamon and sugar), put the flour in that. I sprinkle a bit in the diaper and then quite a bit on the skin itself. It works like a dream... An old family remedy! I also let our little guy crawl around naked after bath time to dry out as well.

I would take her to the ER. It probably is a yeast infection. We live in TX where it is very hot and humid. My son had a rash I couldn't get rid of and he had never had a rash at all before! When I took him to the dr. it was a yeast infection. I didn't even know boys could get yeast infections!!! Try the diaper rash ointment called Butt Paste. And maybe eating yogurt. I think this is supposed to help yeast infections. You should definately take her to the dr. though to find out for sure what it is...I would just leave the diaper off until you can get to the dr.Good luck I know how it is when there miserable, your miserable too!

The below methods are relatively safe and effective but ofcourse they are not an alternative to medical attention, you still need to see a doctor. If there is open sores then there is almost for sure an infection.DO NOT use an antiobiotic ointment or you could cause a cross infection. Antibiotic ointments prevent infection but they can have the opposite effect if one is already present because many types of bacteria, once established, are, or can quickly become, resistant to bacatraicin and neomycin (polymyxin only kills fungi) so the bacteria uses the ointment as a medium to spread and grow. For immediate relief of pain and inflammation you need to put 2 tablespoon of salt into 16 oz of warm water then soak a cloth in the solution and hold it against the infection. Do this as much as possible, this provides very fast relief from pain and inflammation and helps kill the infection. Before bed you can apply cold pressed castor oil (most health food stores will sell it, do not get processed castor from a drugstore!) which will protect the area from irritation and also help kill the infection, there is little risk of cross infection with castor because bacteria cannot develope a resistance. It is possible to be allergic to castor so do a patch test before appyling it. If you can't find cold pressed castor at a store, a good online source that can do next day delivery is http://www.mothernature.comcastor oil is pressed from the ricinus communis bean.

You have been given some great advice already but I thought I would mention that you are right about the teething being a suspect in the rash. Teething puts acid in the saliva to break down the gums therefor makes the waste in the diapers more harsh. Limit acids in the foods and juices at the time to help bring down the acid levels, example, no orange juice, tomatoes. Don't worry, everything will be okay soon. you are being a great parent , I can tell just by the level of your concern.

happened to my son and nurse told me to beat an egg and put in on and leave nappy on, acts like a barrier, sounds funny but it actually worked, something to do with the starch. Obviously this is only a stopgap until you can get to doctor of if it flares up again . good luck!!

May sound strange..but try plain active cultured yogurt after every diaper change (assuming she is still in diapers). Just smear it on her hiney after each cleaning. the coolness will feel good to the rash and the active cultures will kill the yeast overgrowth. Thats what she has going on. You may need to treat internally also..if so if you are non vegans..then give a bit of active cultured yogurt a few times a day. within 2-3 days you should notice a definate clearing. best of luck!Maybe time to consider Elimination Communication and eliminate using diapers. Its great to have small ones not needing to use diapers!
